Green lagoons, limestone cliffs, monkeys on the sand. A phi phi islands day trip from Phuket is easy to book, but the rules have changed — you cannot swim in Maya Bay, and the bay closes every August and September. Friends Hostel is a 15-minute walk from HKT, at the north end of the island: the last stop before the road leaves Phuket for Phang Nga, where most of the boat days and activities actually run. There is no hostel shuttle; Phi Phi boats still leave from the east coast, so expect an early pickup.
Phi phi islands day trip
About 46 km from Phuket. Speedboat 45–60 minutes each way (big boat 1.5–2 hours). Full day 9–10 hours. Park fee often 400฿ adult / 200฿ child, cash at the pier, often not in the tour price. No swimming in Maya Bay. Closed 1 August–30 September; in 2026 it reopens 1 October. Best sea: November to April.

Nov–Apr calmer sea
North Phuket · last stop before Phang Nga
Island notes: TAT — Maya Bay. Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi is a DNP national park. Confirm dates and fees before you pay — they move. A typical phi phi islands day trip still runs in the closure months; Bamboo Island usually replaces Maya Bay.
What you will see
- Maya Bay — the bay from The Beach. Walk in. Do not swim. See rules below.
- Pileh Lagoon — mint-green water, steep cliffs, the swim stop
- Viking Cave — boats stay outside; bamboo scaffolding and rock paintings for bird’s-nest collection
- Monkey Beach — long-tailed macaques. Keep food and bags away. Do not touch or feed them. They bite.
- Phi Phi Don — lunch, usually a Thai buffet, then free time
- Bamboo Island or Khai Islands — last stop. Khai is closer to Phuket (shallower, shorter ride back). Bamboo is the prettier option.

Maya Bay rules you must know
Many guests are disappointed because they expect to swim here. You cannot.
- No swimming — banned since Maya Bay reopened in 2022. Swim at Pileh instead.
- Boardwalk in — boats no longer enter the bay. They stop at Loh Samah on the back side; you walk about 5 minutes on wood.
- Time is capped — about one hour, roughly 375 people at once. The bay is often full by ~10:30 AM. Early boats win.
- Hours — about 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Park fee is usually the same 400฿ adult ticket.
- Closed every year — usually 1 August to 30 September, reopening 1 October (including 2026). The park confirms dates each year. Tours still go; they swap in Bamboo Island.
- Other — drones need an advance park permit. Reef-safe sunscreen is requested. Small blacktip reef sharks in the shallows are harmless.
Three ways to do a phi phi islands day trip
Speedboat tour
You want more stops and less time on the water. “Early bird” boats can reach Maya Bay around 07:30. Rough on small children and anyone who gets seasick. Sit toward the back if you do.
Big boat tour
You want shade and a calmer ride. Families and relaxed travellers. Trade-off: a longer day and less time at each stop.
Public ferry
You only need Tonsai Pier on Phi Phi Don. Rassada to Tonsai is about 1.5 hours, often around 450฿ one-way; a speedboat transfer is about 50 minutes and around 800฿. Arrive 30–45 minutes early. To reach Maya Bay you still need a longtail charter (~1,500–3,000฿ half day) or a tour. Check the last boat back to Phuket. This works better as an overnight on Phi Phi, not a day trip.

How much will it cost?
Budget for one adult on a phi phi islands day trip:
| Item | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Tour (speedboat or big boat) | About 1,500–3,000฿ |
| National park fee (if not included) | 400฿ adult / 200฿ child (ages 4–11), cash in baht |
| Hotel pickup surcharge | Some operators charge extra from the north |
| Drinks, snacks, tips | Your call |
Plan about 2,000–3,500฿ per person all in. Ask what is included: lunch, snorkel gear, insurance, park fee. Operator websites are marketing figures — get a real quote before you book.
Best time for a phi phi islands day trip
- November to April — calmer sea, clearer water. This is the window that actually matches the photos.
- May to October — more rough-sea days. Operators cancel or move you if it is unsafe; you usually get a refund or another date. If your dates are flexible, put the boat near the end of your stay so you have a spare day. Seasons: best time to visit Phuket.
Safety and what to bring
Pick the operator, not the cheapest number. Ask: real safety briefing? Child-size life jackets? How is snorkeling supervised? What happens if the sea is rough? Use a licensed boat. Children 4+ can usually join speedboats; some skip pregnant guests on speedboats. Friends Hostel is adult-only (12+), so the hostel age is already above that floor — the boat’s rules still apply.
- Swimsuit, towel, a dry change of clothes
- Reef-safe sunscreen, hat, sunglasses
- Cash in Thai baht for the park fee
- Waterproof phone pouch
- Seasickness medicine if you use it — ask the guide before departure. Packing list: what to pack for a hostel stay in Phuket

| Afternoon | Monkey Beach, then Bamboo or Khai |
| ~17:00 | Back at the pier, then transfer to the hostel |
Going from Friends Hostel
We sit at the north end of Phuket, 15 minutes on foot from HKT — not five minutes. This is the last hostel stop on the island before the highway crosses to Phang Nga. James Bond (Phang Nga Bay), Similan via Khao Lak, and a lot of the day’s tours and activities go that way, so you are not starting in Patong and crawling the length of Phuket. Phi Phi boats still leave from Rassada on the east coast. There is no hostel shuttle. Ask whether the operator picks up at Nai Yang or whether you meet at the pier; some add a collection fee. An early start is normal.
You can book a phi phi islands day trip through us, plus James Bond Island, Similan (high season), and other activities. Start on the tours page. If pickup, dates, or Maya Bay being open need a human check, ask reception — they confirm before you go. Overview of other boats: day trips from Friends Hostel.
