Hidden Gems in Phuket: North Phuket Spots Near the Airport

Thalang National Museum

Most visitors picture Patong. The hidden gems in phuket sit in the north: long empty sand, a half-buried Buddha, a small museum, a jungle waterfall. Friends Hostel is a 15-minute walk from HKT with a Smart Bus stop at the door — this is our neighbourhood, not a day-trip from the south.

Three beaches

Start with sand. These three are the coastal hidden gems in phuket that do not look like Kata.

01
Sirinat · ~10–11 km of sand

Mai Khao Beach

Why go

Longest beach on the island, inside Sirinat National Park. Walk for an hour and meet almost no one. Planes pass low when the wind puts the runway that way — early (about 7–10 AM) is the usual photo window. Turtles nested here Nov–Feb; treat marked nests as closed, not a show. Open sand is free to walk; official park gates often charge foreign adults (figures around 200฿ — confirm). Do not swim in the monsoon. The sea here can be lethal in the wet months.

hidden gems in phuket — Mai Khao Beach

02
~10 min south of HKT

Nai Thon Beach

Why go

Wide bay, casuarina shade, a wooden stair at the north end, sunbeds and small kitchens across the road. Swim Nov–May when it is usually calm; snorkel the rocky ends if you bring a mask. May–October: rough. Stay for sunset.

Nai Thon Beach — quiet north Phuket

03
Far north · ~30 min

Sai Kaew Beach

Why go

Two to three kilometres, narrow, often empty. Not a “wow” postcard. No lifeguards. Swim only when it is clearly calm. Pair with Sarasin Bridge after.

Sai Kaew Beach northern Phuket

Temple and museum

04
Thalang · ~13.5 km south of HKT

Wat Phra Thong

Why go

Golden Buddha buried to the shoulders. Legend: a boy tied a buffalo to a “stump” that was the statue’s head; it was never fully dug out. Open daily about 8:00–17:30, free. Cover shoulders and knees — pack a scarf. Small on-site museum (tin mining, Chinese heritage).

05
Heroines Monument roundabout

Thalang National Museum

Why go

Burmese war, tin boom, Chinese heritage, sea gypsies. Recent visitors report AC and English labels, about 1–1.5 hours. Entry has been listed around 100฿; hours often 9:00–16:30. Some listings say closed Mon–Tue — check before you Grab over. One room was still closed as of May 2025. Free parking. Good rain plan.

Jungle and the bridge

06
Khao Phra Thaeo · ~21.5 km · taxi

Bang Pae Waterfall

Why go

Last evergreen forest on the island. About 10 minutes on a trail that can be slick — real shoes, not flip-flops, plus insect spray. More water in the rains; still worth it Dec–May. Park hours often 8:00–16:30. Foreign fee is quoted 200฿, sometimes 400฿ if Ton Sai is bundled — pay at the gate and keep the ticket (it may cover another park the same day). No alcohol. Do not jump from the rocks. Nearby: Gibbon Rehabilitation Project — you will hear them; you cannot walk up to the cages.

07
Phuket–mainland

Sarasin Bridge

Why go

Walk the pedestrian path, stay for lights at sunset, eat seafood on the shore. Easy last stop after Sai Kaew.

North Phuket jungle and coast

How to get around

  • Grab / taxi — Bang Pae and Sai Kaew have almost no bus. Grab Thailand
  • Scooter — only with a licence you can show, and a helmet
  • Smart Bus — stop in front of Friends Hostel for the west-coast line, not these dirt tracks. Guide: cheap way to get around Phuket

When to go

  • Nov–Apr — calm sea: Nai Thon, Mai Khao walks
  • May–Oct — skip the swim; do Wat Phra Thong, the museum, Bang Pae

Three easy half-days

Pick one. That is enough for a first look at the hidden gems in phuket without a packed van tour.

  • Culture: Wat Phra Thong → museum → Heroines Monument
  • Beach: Mai Khao early → café in Nai Yang → sunset Nai Thon (high season)
  • Jungle: Bang Pae, then lunch. Eat at Super Chef when you are back at the hostel
